What is a feral cat?
Feral cats are outdoor cats that have never been socialized with humans, or their interaction with humans has decreased over time. They are typically fearful of people and are not likely to become indoor cats. Feral cats are often the result of abandonment or being born to other feral cats. They survive by hunting for food and shelter in their environment. While they can be difficult to approach, feral cats can still be helped through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs. These programs humanely trap feral cats, spay or neuter them, and then release them back into their environment. This helps to control the feral cat population and improve their overall health.
What is a stray cat?
Stray cats are domestic cats that have been abandoned or lost and are now living on the streets. Unlike feral cats, stray cats were once accustomed to human interaction and may be more approachable. However, they may still be fearful of humans due to their experience of being abandoned or lost. Stray cats can be helped through rescue organizations that provide food, shelter, and medical care. It's important to remember that stray cats, like all animals, deserve to be treated with kindness and respect.
How can I tell a feral cat from a stray cat?
A feral cat will not approach you, and if you approach them, they will quickly run off. They also do not meow at you as your house cat or a stray cat does.
The people in our community who care for feral colonies are often able to gain a tenuous trust with the cats. Given time and patience, a feral cat can become used to a human moving about their territory.
